There’s a bad trend I’m starting to see at too many conferences. Especially if said conference is focused on a fairly narrow niche subject. The problem? Over-Introductions.
Let’s say you’re at a social media conference. The room is probably a good mix of the experienced and active as well as the inexperienced but interested. And let’s say the day is packed with at least six speakers.
To speakers 2 through 6, we don’t need you to kick off your presentation with the qualifying introduction that plagues so many social media presentations. You know the ones I’m talking about. They talk about the Motrin backlash. They exhort the many benefits of personal branding. They show the Socialnomics video (right here, right now ….).
It’s all good stuff, but it’s probably all been covered in the first presentation.
If you’re speaking at a conference soon, realize that the later in the day you speak, the more meat we want. We audience members are usually past the point of talking theory and we really want some hardcore how-tos and unique stuff. Stop boring us with your spin on why this stuff is important (we get it!!) and give us what we want.
