Optimization Summit in Dallas – a Recap
My brain hurts.
I spent the past two days sitting at the feet of several social media studs and stallions, and my cerebellum is literally throbbing. And it somehow all happened at a conference targeted for property managers, of all things.
Multifamily Pro hosted a truly all-star event in Dallas this week known as Optimization Summit. The format featured four to five two-hour workshops at a time, featuring topics on branding to pricing to SEO to email marketing to social media planning. Held at the Sheraton, the relatively small group (my guess is around 200 folks, yes?) were treated to learning and insights like I’ve never seen at a conference. Huge kudos to Tami and the Multifamily Pro team for pulling this off.
So here’s my plan: since it would be a horrible idea for me to cram all of my ideas into a single blog post, I’ll spend the next week sprinkling in my takeaways from the workshops I attended, which included ….
- Geno Church: People are the Killer App
- Jason Falls: Social Media Strategy, Measurement and ROI
- Andy Beal: Social Media Monitoring Tools
- Christopher S. Penn: Email Marketing and Customer Retention
- Mack Collier: Think Like a Rockstar
- Erica Campbell: Video and Photo Sharing for Optimal Growth
As the posts go live, the text above will be linked, so at least keep an eye on this page. Or, just subscribe to the blog and be lazy.
All in all, this Dallas conference was truly way more than I expected. If you were there, what was your biggest takeaway?

First of all my biggest take away was huge appreciation for Tami and her Multifamilypro team who worked like rock stars. Regarding the sessions, the information provided a platform for the multifamily industry to think outside the box and dip our toes into uncharted waters and not be afraid. Regarding the speakers, I got to hang with most of them and they were truly amazed at the passion of our professionals and were completely amazed to be able to speak to such a focused group. Education was my takeaway. You can never ever go wrong with learning and applying beneficial information. Thanks for the post and sorry I did not get to meet you at #optsum.
This event certainly opened my eyes even more to the variety of ways available to us within the social media realm. After the first day it felt overwhelming, during the lunch and learn (With Duncan Alney, Eric Brown, Erica Campbell, Jay Ehret and Mark Juleen)it was all brought home. You have to stop, take a look around and pick your battles one at a time. Know what you want to achieve AND know who you are. Once that is done then jump in.
Here is my main take away from these 2 days:
“Our buildings, your community. Social media is a cradle for this community to grow into…”
Frederic – I think you’re right: Take the small bite-sized amount you can do now and go do it well. Then come back to the well and draw out something else when you’re ready.
I love how you relate social media to a cradle. Nice.

Jonathan – yeah, sorry we didn’t get to meet in person. Plenty of tweeting, though!
I’m actually very surprised at the knowledge some people in the Multifamily industry have when it comes to online marketing. And yes, Tami and team did work like a rockstar. Great, great conference.
