Phil Knight, Nike CEO, on Product Marketing

“Now we understand that the most important thing we do is market the product. We’ve come around to saying that Nike is a marketing-oriented company, and the product is our most important marketing tool. ”
Phil Knight, CEO Nike
My take: When your product becomes a marketing tool, then your purpose is finally centered on the customer you serve. Too many great products have come and gone because they were busy finding a customer for the product. It’s a lot easier to produce a product for the customer.
What are some good and bad examples of companies that really capture this idea?

Serena Williams is a disgrace and your company’s association with her is questionable at this point. Separate from her as soon as possible.

First you make slaves out of Children, now you take back Michael Vick, an animal murderer! Shame on YOU! I will never buy NIKE, and will do everything in my power to make sure no one in my Family and in my circle of friends spends their money on your products either! There are so many decent people in sports why would you stoop so low as to take this LOSER( Michael Vick) back! My mother always told me never trust a person who mistreats an animal, because more than likely Humans are next!
I can’t believe you are this heartless and ignorant!
Vick isn’t sorry, he’s sorry he got caught!

I was poised to purchase a set of Nike golf clubs. Now, I will not. When I see Tiger Woods, I don’t think of Nike, I think of a scumbag cheater. He is a disgrace.
